Things I Talked about Over Christmas

Mark Madoff’s suicide: so sad. And: did he really not know? And: did we take the generational-sin-blame thing to far?

The scoundrels at J.Crew who sell lesser-quality replicas at their Factory Store. Who knew, until you fell for it and realized it was not the shirt you thought it was?! Very sneaky of them to subvert the ol’ just-last-season’s paradigm that we’ve come to expect from outlet stores.

Aluminium in deodorant: is this still a concern or just a rumor? Yes,  no, respectively. Is the Deodorant Stone a possible solution? Some say yes, but it’s hard to get over how weird that website is.

Thanks Allie! When we talked about it, it was more of a “this happened to me, oh, you too?” But I just googled “j.crew factory store online cheaper quality” and it pulled up a bunch of complaints. I think people are mostly annoyed that it was never clarified cheaper price = cheaper quality. Like I said, sneaky! : )

Ah! Gotcha. So far, I’ve gotten two things at the J.Crew factory outlet and they seem okay but it’s only been a few months. I have a friend who complains about the opposite (regular J.Crew clothes starting to get holes, seams tearing).

I will second the rising suspicions about J. Crew’s “Factory Store” line. It looks just about the same, but there’s something…off. It’s like bizarro-J.Crew. The stitching is a little coarse, the material is just a little less refined… The sweaters are a a little thinner, the Oxford shirts are a little less fitted…

    Don’t be fooled, consumer.

just made a jcrew factory return (baggy bum in men’s pants). how disappointing. and for whatever reason I believe the deodorant rumors, which is perhaps uncharacteristic (still skeptical of BPA and did you read in NY mag about the vaccinations-autism scam?), but nonetheless, Trader Joe’s deodorant is decent if you are willing to reapply in the afternoon.

With what I don’t spend anymore on J. Crew (until I’m back for a shopping trip), I spend on deodorant.

I use the Purifying deodorant from L’Occitane and love it. It has less aluminium than the product I used previously. I figure it’s a step in the right direction, and a nice middle-ground.
