Automatic Floralizer
If I could, I would send all my old Gap t-shirts and spring clothes to an Automatic Floralizer, which (as I imagine it) would just print floral over whatever is currently there, and then iron all my shirts and send them back to me.

Bonus Track
My friend Grant, who is currently drawing away down at SCAD, made this cutout to accompany a letter to a friend. Grant observes:
Getting something like that in the mail is really fun because it doesn’t just sit there, you have to interact with it, and then when it’s done, you have a little collectible ‘thing’ sitting around.
This is just one of several proven reasons it’s good to keep artist-friends close to you.

Balloons for Monday Morning

Over the weekend Half/Dozen gallery in Portland presented a one night show of giant pink helium* balloons, entitled High Hopes. Gorgeous. I love how they used the traditional balloon ribbon in such enormous quantity. Click here for more photos.

*which brings me to the recent sleeper news item: how bizarre is the looming helium shortage? (Sorry that’s a USA Today link, but I like their tone for this extremely threatening issue.) Does anyone want to think about life without balloons?

Tasting right now:
I think this is my first pinot rosé. It tastes better than the rosés I’ve had before–not as stingily crisp as your typical summer pink. When I was tempted into buying it (they were tasting it with a mint and lemon pea soup), I learned the rosé wines from 2009 are just starting to arrive from France: “They’re on the boat over here right now.” Purchased around the corner at Charles Street Liquors.

Basically
Joe and I have been hunting for a blog theme for the market, which involves sorting through a number of painfully designed options. Yesterday we spent a good hour mooning over Basic Maths, a wordpress (.org) theme c0-designed by Khoi Vinh. It’s not the feeling we’re looking for at all and we could never write enough to justify the density it can handle, but wow, it’s beautiful.

Collections
I follow (on my trusty google reader) A Collection a Day, where Lisa Cogndon shares a new photo every day of small collections she has gathered.

Sometimes she draws collections, ones that don’t actually exist. I like this one of Jonathan Adler lamps, because it is exactly what the collection would look like anyway.

Khoi Vinh at the BPL

The Society of Printers (which has a remarkably fitting website for printers) will host the New York Time‘s head web designer and minimalism-fanboy Khoi Vinh for free for everyone at the Boston Public Library on April 14th. Details here. I already know I’ll be out of town, but I really wish I could go because I’ve been reading his blog for awhile and it seems a little ridiculous to miss. If you click over there, you get a feeling for the kind of design he revels in, as well as a chance to see his dog, Mr. President.

No kidding

I mentioned on Twitter last week that I’m Here, Spike Jonze’s new short film, is now available online to watch in full. But after finally watching it myself, I’ve now realized that was not sufficient as a recommendation. You should definitely mark off the next thirty minutes as cozy-movie-time and watch it now. And thank Absolut for their sponsorship by buying a bottle of Absolut Boston. And then debate whether to have it with ginger ale or tonic, both being nice options.

Inspired Campaign
Cole Haan’s Inspired Life Campaign. Photographed by the guy who gets us behinds the scenes in all sorts of people’s lives– The Selby. Real people models, who actually look happy to be there. Plus, he gave each “model” a handwritten questionnaire, which they responded to in kind, and really, how often do you see actual handwriting these days?

I particularly like the ones of Harley Viera-Newton because she can write in hyrographics which would have won me over for life when I was twelve. If you are into athletic blonds who bake cookies, you will melt equivalently at the Maria Sharapova shoot.

First saw the campaign on Valet’s daily dose.
